Aster Rhys Unveils Immersive Folk Effort ‘Ocean Deep’

A quirky and hypnotising offering, ‘Ocean Deep’ is rather theatrical in its external livery, almost dramatic. It’s mainly due to its folk, sea-shanty character, drenched in mediaeval flair and historical relevance. Built on accordions, flutes and acoustic guitars, ‘Ocean Deep’ successfully blends tradition with modernity, with the latter represented in the deep drums pounding that supercharges the song into a bigger, more evocative entity.

Aster Rhys is the talented human behind the record. Championing an overwhelmingly folk-looking project, the American songstress engages in luscious and vibrant vocals, taking the listeners inside her expansive tales of personal experience and broken love. ‘Ocean Deep’ hints at the limitless features of the sea – a fitting metaphor for the complex and dubious circumstances around human nature.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Rhys explains: “It captures the essence of a relationship that has unravelled, likening the experience to the vast and mysterious depths of the ocean.”
