Over the past few months, we have certainly grown accustomed to Arliston. The British duo champions a meaningful and evocative indie-pop style that’s drenched in nuanced arrangements and evocative lyricism. Writing about the pair’s previous single ‘How in Heaven’, we proudly declared it “one of the most beautiful and heartfelt tunes that we’ve heard so far this year.” We stand by our words; Arliston certainly knows how to wrap the listener in emotional, wholesome goo, a quality that makes it easy to retain a loyal audience.
‘Thawed’ is the duo’s latest effort, an elegant, luscious gem that seems to be leaving Arliston’s indie stylings behind, in favour of more complex and eclectic folk-pop stylings. Immensely cathartic and expressive, the single features quirky drum grooves and layered vocal harmonies, at times resembling similar artistic giants such as Bon Iver – among others.
We are particularly fond of its ending. ‘Thawed’ builds toward an epic resolution, with the song’s bridge engulfing everything into a stream of intense textures and cinematic percussions. Before the last chorus kicks in, we get a taste of Arlington’s pure, unfiltered vocals, so malleable yet intimate, soothing but also quite vivid.
