Listening to Arcade Apocalypse instantly reminded us of German producer Lauer, among others: championing a synthwave sonic imprint drenched in italo-disco and synth-pop references, the Florida-based creative drives a nostalgic artistic character, yet steeped in a futuristic aura. It’s the classic case of something sounding nostalgic in such a quirky and edgy way, that it becomes modern and cutting-edge. That’s what Arcade Apocalypse stand for.
‘Apocalypse Sunrise & Expect Magnetic’ is the project’s latest effort, a fruitful collaboration with Jason Banning that gives way to two stunningly lush and obscure pieces. ‘Expect Magnetic’ is perhaps the most obscure of the pair, delving deep into 80s lore and Depeche Mode-esque industrial tones. Vocals are sultry and intimate, the perfect match for such an electrifying record.
‘Apocalypse Sunrise’, while still sharing the same melancholic outlook, feels more focused on a blend of Hi-Nrg and new wave stylings, ultimately still sounding mysterious, even eerie. We are big fans of such an authentically retro production: it’s a sign that the Florida talent takes things seriously, embarking on a musical research that’s certainly paying off.
