We became familiar with Ann Marie Nacchio rather quickly, having discovered her introspective yet soothing brand of classic pop not long ago. In fact, while featuring ‘Tell Me Something’, we proudly declared: “featuring a poignant piano, anthemic drums and a rather cinematic strings section, the piece provides the perfect framework for Nacchio’s evocative and perceive vocals, engaging in decisively complex topline, with frequent pauses and unexpected melodies.” Now, the American songwriter is back with a decisively more sizeable offering, the stunning EP ‘And Now It’s Time For a Breakdown’.
What’s special about it, is the framework behind it: the record is part of a double-EP concept, started last year with ‘It’s been a day, a week, a month, a year’, and culminating with the aforementioned new release. It all showcases how deeply informed and nuanced Nacchio’s artistry is: she doesn’t settle for quick singles, or commercial tropes, instead pursuing a longer and more complex vision, stemming from her deep musical awareness.
‘And Now It’s Time For a Breakdown’ could be considered tamer than its predecessor, although in both EPs we find a certain dualism, contrasting pompous, art-pop material with acoustic and soothing gems. Perhaps a nod to the lyrical matter, exploring the depths of human consciousness around mental health and relationships. Eventually, the listener will rejoice from the experience – certainly a rare flower in an overcrowded and frankly boring music scene.
