‘The Kids’ is one of the best examples of how a song needs time to grow and mature. Originally written in 1989 by Canadian musician Michael Fisher, aka Animal Souls, it then spent years in a fictitious artistic ‘incubation’, eventually finding a place on the project’s 2021 album ‘Wisdom of Crowds’. The version we are hearing today is likely to be the final one, and it’s safe to say, ‘The Kids’ has now found the charming energy that’s also propelling it forward.
From a sonic standpoint, Animal Souls embraces a fully vintage blues-rock flair, lining up slick guitar distortions and a wealth of electroacoustic keys and organs. The result is the perfect match for Fisher’s deep and evocative songwriting, delivered by singer Ava Wolsynuk on this occasion. Overall, the production level of the record is very high, and we are frankly impressed by its clarity and punch.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song’s lyricism, Animal Souls playfully recounts: “I’m not really sure what I was trying to say in THE KIDS… I wrote the song 35 years ago so the original meaning has faded somewhat. I think it evokes a sense of innocence that children begin life’s journey with.”
