There’s something truly intoxicating about good pop music. Anie Delgado knows something about it, having released a bunch of shiny, luscious modern records that have captured the attention of thousands of listeners on Spotify alone. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see her transform into a global phenomenon rather soon. For now, though, Delgado continues her streak of stunning singles with ‘99¢ Jesus’, her latest effort.
From a sonic standpoint, the track is everything we would like it to be: bouncy grooves, fuzzy electronic tones and contemporary solutions, all wrapped up in Anie’s dynamic, evocative vocals. Yet, it’s the songwriting that steals our attention: written as a reaction to the old toxic masculinity that’s prominent in small communities throughout America, Delgado reflects on independence and self-reliance, betting on herself instead of playing a role given to her by outdated views.
Delving deeper into the reasoning behind the record, the Los Angeles-based songstress eloquently explains: “It Is about breaking up with the male gaze and with those kinds of men in general. It couldn’t be more topical as we have a bunch of 99¢ Jesuses trying to bring us back in time instead of forward in the US. This song is a defiant rejection of culture that oppresses women and it celebrates the freedom that comes with breaking free of toxic masculinity.”
