The carrier of an inspiring story, Asian-American artist Darro released a brand new album earlier this month, including a series of past singles that marked a year of extensive productivity for the Brooklyn-based talent. ‘Accidents’ follows up on the previous full-length record, ‘Songs of Recovery’: and here we need to tell you a story.
While initially debuting with its own artist project in 2017, he was subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumour that resulted in surgery and rehabilitation, which forced him to re-learn to speak and sing. While many would have been lost in pain and melancholy, Darro worked hard to get back to music. ‘Songs of Recovery’ is exactly that: Darro’s glorious return.
A 10-track album, ‘Accidents’ provides a fresh glimpse of Darro’s refined artistry, building on his poignant pop-punk style with a certain emo flavouring. In it, you’ll find a wide range of influences. From the pure pop-punk number such as ‘Signing Out’ and ‘Something I’m Not Used To’, to more electronically-infused gems (the likes of ‘Wanna Say Goodbye’, ‘Phoning In’). The keen listener will also find constant hip-hop references, in the form of light trap beats. It is the dualism between trap and pop-punk that makes the record extremely contemporary, highlighting Duarro’s evocative lyricism, encompassing love, empowerment, challenge and reckoning.
Overall, a big step up for the American talent, who’s onto something special.
