The keen reader will remember British R’n’B sensation Amethyst from her recent single ‘Boys’, a nuanced and meaningful track we proudly described as a “fierce, empowering gem” and “a passionate response to painful news”. Praised by the likes of COLORS, DUMMY, and Wordplay Magazine, the record greatly showcased Amethyst’s ability to write lyrical matter drenched in social militancy.
Last week, the Chichester native returned with a more playful, mischievous offering, ‘Higher’. Namely inspired by music legend Beyonce, the track greatly showcases Amethyst’s songwriting prowess. How could it not be? Sultry, near-perfect vocals gently navigate flavourful, yielding melodies, culminating in a gloriously relatable and catchy chorus.
All of that is framed into a sonic continuum of luscious, intimate R’n’B, the perfect companion for the artist’s honest, authentic material.
A long time in the making, ‘Higher’ was originally written 5 years ago. Describing the lyrical theme behind it, Amethyst explains: “At the time of writing this I was with my ex and we were deeply in love so all those feelings I talk about were real. […] I still feel it can relate to anyone who is dating, who knows that feeling or hasn’t been there yet but can let me know about all the excitement that’s to come”.
Overall, this a stellar return from the London resident, who’s marking herself as one of the most interesting newcomers.
