Music can be a powerful tool for processing trauma, pain and life in general. Flooding a paper with emotions we were keeping locked inside can be a cathartic experience, allowing us to face the challenges and grow, while providing solace and empowerment to potential listeners. For London-based songstress Amethyst, songwriting represented the perfect occasion to reflect on gender inequality in our society. Her latest effort ‘Boys’ is a passionate response to painful news, such as last year’s Sarah Everard’s tragic death. As Amethyst explain: “I was sick and tired of seeing men, (boys), being able to get away with anything and abusing their power, whether that be within the workplace, relationships or just day-to-day life and seeing no repercussions”.
Of course, the depth of her songwriting is not certainly news. Debuting in 2021, Amethyst has been rallying a loyal and adoring audience, by delivering a series of sultry, groovy gems, oscillating between neo-soul and classic R’n’B. The result is engaging, fresh material, building the perfect backdrop for her charming vocals, dancing around melodies and harmonies to create bucolic sonic scenarios where listeners can find their inner selves.
Receiving support from the likes of Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, COLORS and Dummy Mag, ‘Boys’ is a worthy follow-up from the artist’s previous EP ‘Get Comfortable’, and certainly a song that won’t go unnoticed. Doubling down on the meaning behind the track, Amethyst describes: “Men need to start changing how they act towards woman, queer, trans, non-binary and all LGBTQIA+ people. I hate the fact that so many people will resonate with this song, but I hope it will help to create change.” A message that will be greatly enhanced by the beautiful music video shot by Amethyst and Kimberly Fua, celebrating the resilience and pride of every womxn.
