It is special to follow the journey of a talented artist, from her debut single to her debut EP. That’s exactly what we witnessed with Ally Cribb, singer and songwriter boasting crystalline vocals and intimate, heartfelt songwriting. And how couldn’t it be? Cribb’s story is one of grief, pain and resilience. At the height of the pandemic, her mother passed away, shaking the young talent to her core. Music provided a medium for expression and grievance, allowing her to process the sudden trauma.
We featured Ally Cribb earlier this year, on the occasion of her debut single ‘Bigger’. Sharing a big pop sensibility, we were able to catch glimpses of her gifted artistry. Now, the Torontonian returns with a whole EP, ‘Unbroken’, shading even more light on what we can expect from Cribb.
Opening with the known hit ‘Bigger’, the record then jumps into a more intimate ballad, ‘California’. Featuring big piano vibes and poignant songwriting, it truly is the record’s masterpiece. A potential timeless classic. ‘Leave It Behind’ continues on the same theme, gracefully taking us to ‘End Of August’, a slightly more upbeat effort. Cribb’s vocals emerge charismatic, precise and evocative, exploding in every chorus and drawing an imaginary line to the listeners, easing them into her strong lyrical storytelling.
We have no doubt about the relatability of Ally’s lyrics. ‘Unbroken’ will provide solace and guidance to many of us, and that’s a precious gift from the Canadian talent, even more impressive when you consider her young age.
