A slice of elegant playfulness, ‘Guest Room’ is a rather attractive offering. Penned by London-based songstress Alfreda, the record is immensely cathartic and theatrical, moving along veiled poignancy, tongue-in-cheek lyricism and a strong quirkiness that’s truly charming and evocative. Alfreda’s Cabaret-tested vocals are perfectly on point, showcasing the talented creative’s malleable and luscious tone.
Honestly, it’s a great record. Pursuing its own avant-garde pop formula, the track is relatable yet innovative and surprising. Such an eclectic sonic livery gives way to deeper lyricism, exploring themes of rejection, love and femininity across human nature. As Alfreda explains: “I remembered the time I was spending the weekend with my first boyfriend’s family. Upon arrival, I was put in a separate room, and I took great offence. The rejection I felt was certainly disproportionate for the situation, but it taps into a deep place of neglect and a feeling of abandonment”.
