‘My Kind of Damaged’ is not what appears to be on the surface; introduced by a gentle and dark piano, the track welcomes Alexa Villa’s evocative vocals into ballad-like territories, before slowly raising the intensity and developing into a fierce and empowering anthem – one tainted by a gloomy and misty energy, well mirroring the troubled lyrical theme behind the song.
In fact, there’s a good deal of cinematic styling in it, too. Especially in the main chorus, packed with orchestral references and poignant vibes. Villa is perfectly at home in such settings. Full of gravitas and nuances, her tone is the perfect match for such a meaningful piece. It’s a fantastic effort by the American singer and multi-instrumentalist, here showcasing all her artistic prowess; look out for her upcoming EP.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, she explains: “This song is about facing those fears after what seems like a lifetime of running from my feelings. It’s a stop along the way to discovering that maybe I am enough. Because maybe they’re my kind of damaged too. I have come out of hiding and I’m searching for you”.
