Adam + Attack By Fire is very adamant in explaining how Americana wasn’t necessarily a genre he was striving for. Simply, it just happened. In a way, it’s a truly wisdom-driven songwriting strategy: the American songster focuses on his lyrical needs, instead of pursuing a vague idea of what his project should sound like. ‘Rhythm That Was’ is strong evidence of that. Built on quirky and playful Americana influences, it’s certainly a stand-out in Adam + Attack By Fire’s catalogue.
An unicorn? Perhaps. It’s undeniable that while Adam Tarsitano champions eclectic creativity, he’s also progressively moved towards a more intimate and dynamic sonic imprint, one that favours acoustic tones instead of hard distortions. In any case, we expect Adam + Attack By Fire to change course again in the future, and perhaps get back to its rock-lenient roots.
Tarsitano’s heartwarming, earthy vocals are a perfect match for the simple yet impactful subject matter in ‘Rhythm That Was’. As Adam explains: “It started out as a relatively sad song about a short-lived but impactful relationship. While it remains that way lyrically throughout, the overall groove of the chorus is very upbeat. It felt very yin and yang, which I thought was interesting.”
