We don’t recall to have ever featured the ‘last’ record of a project. Winnipeg-based talent AC Breeze is announcing the retirement of his project, instead focusing on his band OpenTAB. We often feature debuting artists, but never a project’s last effort. So how we can honour it? How can we make sure we celebrate AC Breeze for his service to the music community? Well, we can help in inspiring listeners to check out his music.
Active for the best part of the last decade, AC Breeze has always stood for hip-hop and soul sensibilities, exploring a wide range of influences: from the boom-bap and soulful vibes of ‘EL TRAGICO’ to the poignant indie-pop of ‘Three Letters’, it is all part of the Canadian talent’s convoluted artistry, focused on lyrical matter and unfiltered artistic expression.
‘monotone’ is the last (and we mean it) single of the project. Its ‘swan song’, if you will. A fitting end: the track feels tame while being intense and emotional. It doesn’t go out of its way, but it rather pulls the listener in with relatable lyricism and heartfelt vocals. Built over a guitar-rich minimal beat, the record puts AC Breeze’s in the spotlight, allowing him to connect with the listeners instantly.
Eventually, as the song approached its end, we heard a cassette being turn off. Perhaps we all live in a giant stereo, and the cassette ending its run is just a sign AC Breeze has completed its duty. Luckily, you won’t have to rewind.
