Abraxa Fuses Dark Techno and Avant-garde in New EP ‘I Can Let You Go Now’

We have always had a deep-seated appreciation for artists who are not afraid to pursue their own personal, authentic paths. Artists that refuse the mainstream, instead focusing on innovation and sonic research. We might have found one of them, in the shape of Berlin-based sound magician Abraxa. The German talent is a skilled producer and a classically-trained piano player. In fact, she’s keen to declare her classical efforts as the main push towards electronic experimentation. In a world where everything is fixed and strictly regulated, she was looking for artistic freedom and personal expression.

‘I Can Let You Go Now’ is Abraxa’s debut EP, and it follows a plethora of singles released between ‘21 and ‘22. If there’s one thing clear from the beginning, is that the Berlin resident favours darker atmospheres, navigating towards ethereal, industrial ambient and underground techno vibes.

Opener ‘Raging in an Empty Room’ builds over a hypnotic, magnetising vocal ostinato, pairing punchy and gritty electronica with Abraxa’s angelic voice. The result is a cinematic journey between heaven and hell, a sort of artistic chiaroscuro, a contrast between light and darkness. ‘Reviving Ashes’ takes a cue from its author’s skilled piano playing, featuring it as a starting point. A mellow, acoustic start gives soon space to fast-paced, cerebral techno, later morphing into a garage-flavoured, haunting anthem. To note, the juxtaposition of a steady techno kick with a more nuanced breakbeat groove creates a super groovy rhythm – we’d love to see the punters’ reactions in club settings!

‘Releasing Into Impermanence’ brings the EP to a close, and it’s a triumph. This time we get served Techno and Trance sensibilities with high BPMs and a kaleidoscopic sound. Overall, a great effort from Abraxa, confirming to be one of Berlin’s more talented newcomers.
