A Record Sui Generis: Síomónn Wan Shares ‘Rhythm Phantom Poem Requiem’

I bet you haven’t heard anything so diverse and dazzling before. ‘Rhythm Phantom Poem Requiem’ – the latest album by genius composer and songwriter Síomónn Wan – is both chaotic and organized. Drawing from a limitless pool of influences, the Brighton-based creative pens immersive, colourful pieces with a distinctly playful outlook, although he’s also able to evoke haunting, gloomy energy if the track requires it. Take for instance ‘Poppies’; incredibly anthemic and intense, the song is evocative and hard-hitting at the same time, how could it even be possible?

In short, Wan blends reality to his will. He makes a conscious effort to fold genres and sonic formulas into a blank canvas, layering fiery melodies and kooky grooves with a fashionable, heightened sense of opulence. It might not appeal to everyone, yet we’d urge you to give it a go, as there are multiple easter eggs in the record. Examples of it are the eastern vibes in ‘Mum Drum’, also sharing a distinct ‘videogame’ aura.

Diving into the inspiration behind the album, Síomónn Wan explains: “Music is my tool for exploring fantasies and expressing thoughts. This record brings to life my childhood vision of cartoon characters accidentally eating a Poisonous Mushroom, juxtaposed with Dostoevsky’s probing questions about reality.”
