Often, music is a life-long affair. Artistic creation doesn’t stop with age, it just gets more urgent. Not to mention that getting wiser helps with changing our perspective about our surroundings. Take I’VE TRIED SLEEPING, for instance. Emerging from the US, the project is the kaleidoscopic rock outfit of singer and songwriter Charlie Edwards. On the back of a long journey into music-making, he got fed up with the current state of the music industry – and the low-quality output of modern rock records in general – motivating him to write a power album, a long record recalling the glorious LP of the 60s and 70s. In an era where the ‘song’ format seems to be all that matter, that’s a bold statement!
Nevertheless, Edwards diligently went ahead with its endeavour. Producer Michael Schettler and a pool of fellow musicians helped make it a reality. While the tracklist is being released gradually to streaming services, one of the latest additions was ‘Some Kind Of Mother’, a funk-rock gem that sheds a light on I’VE TRIED SLEEPING’s holistic artistry. Not afraid to blend genres and influences, the American talent develops a tune that is rock-ish in its attitude, but lighter and funkier in its execution. With signature elements such as an exuberant organ and a tambourine, the track is more akin to a soul anthem than to a rock banger.
Lyrically, we are in mental health territories, with Edwards offering support and solace to whoever might need them. Overall, this is a pretty enlightening release. Look out for the whole album, not to be missed.
