‘While Angels Sleep’ is sort of a complex record. Boasting a raw, chaotic and gloomy sonic character, mostly built on 90s alt-rock references and melancholic slow ballads, the album particularly shines in its lyrical content, showcasing all the depth and uniqueness that a project such as A Floor Below has to offer.
Hailing from New Hampshire, US, the group is pretty adamant about what they stand for. Keen to engage in the “darkest corners” of human consciousness, A Floor Below unveil songs about mental health themes, offering a relatable listening experience for anyone struggling with anxiety, loneliness or depression, among others. In fact, they are pretty cosy with the idea of doing the ‘dirty work’ – setting up the important and uneasy conversations, often also the most important ones.
Over thirteen episodes, ‘While Angels Sleep’ wraps the listeners into a dark, poignant literary journey, while serving up fuzzy and noisy guitar tones and uplifting drum grooves. Also, the whole album has a certain old-school grunge feel to it, something that makes it sound particularly compelling and authentic.
As Floor Below explain: “Our music aims to provide a platform for people to acknowledge their darker emotions in order to cope, move past, live with, or achieve whatever their goals are in relation to those feelings.” Mission accomplished, we think.
