Hailing from Italy, _SHOE is a creative on a mission: paying a worthy tribute to Killswitch Engage’s seminal record ‘My Curse’, specifically by “making a cover in my style”. That means that the original metalcore script is now completely flipped, drenched in synthwave and retro energy. Guitars are swapped with dazzling vintage synths and punchy drum machines. Yet, _SHOE’s vocals still carry the same dramatic energy and euphoric melancholia found in the original.
Having debuted only last year, _SHOE has been rather productive, releasing a bunch of singles and even a debut album, ‘The Ritual’. In it, we can familiarize ourselves with the project’s synth-rock livery, effectively pairing retro-pop with distorted guitar and veiled metal elements. It’s all pretty intense, a quality that’s also found in ‘My Curse’ – although the track is decisively lighter in guitars.
It’s important to note that the artist’s background in this case is metal and rock, something that makes a lot of sense when taking a wider look at _SHOE’s catalogue. Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘My Curse’, the Italian artist explains: “The song talks about a curse, and being trapped in it. Attilio Leone, one of the main characters of the Devisal Story, is trapped in this cursed reality, in which he is both dependent and connected to _SHOE”.
