Alex Luke’s artistic journey is pretty inspirational, and definitely the mark of a great talent in the making. Emerging from the northern and smoky lands of Manchester, UK, the young newcomer has been championed by the likes of Help Musicians and The Ivors Academy, allowing him to receive funding and industry support towards his music. The results are for us to see, and they are pretty impressive. ‘What You Cryin’ For?’ is Luke’s latest effort, a stunning and soulful slice of Soul goodness, standing at the intersection of Hip-Hop and Soul Pop.
Self-produced by the Mancunian creative, the record engages in organic and authentic stylings, refraining from mainstream currents while favouring a more personal and leftfield approach. Lyrically, we are in relationship territories, with the song being an honest and fierce break-up song about a cheating ex. It turns out, this ex was the romantic one, who now – in a turn of events – finds itself being the villain of the story.
Shedding further light on the record, Luke explains: “It’s a bittersweet song questioning the actions of someone in a relationship who’s been unfaithful, while also seeing right through the tears and apologies. It has a splash of dark humour and some heartbreaking truths. I wrote it directly after a break up with an ex, it was therapeutic and reassuring of my position in the relationship.”
