There’s a lot to unpack about Lyys. A dreamer and an explorer of the ethereal, the British artist has long championed a rather alternative flair, navigating new wave, shoegaze and lo-fi indie pop in all its shapes and forms. This causes the project to be enjoying a very original identity, fearlessly rejecting mainstream convention in favour of a more introspective and leftfield sound. As a reference, after having listened to Lyys’ latest effort, ‘TV’, our Spotify profile auto-cued a song by The Nith Wave – a sign that the project is firmly planted in the alternative scene, blending it with spacious and bright sonic matter.
Based in South London, Lyys goes by the name Rebecca Holloway by day. Having nurtured her nuanced songwriting skills in the Sussex countryside, her artistry grew immensely after her move to London, allowing her to thrive in the British capital’s rich and kaleidoscopic creative scene. This long research now manifests into ‘TV’, a record that we are especially fond of. A saturated, trip-hop-infused, drum machine pivots the track into higher grounds, while soothing guitars thrive all around, drenched in reverb. A sea of veiled harmonies helps Lyys’ vocals to feel at home, sharing their angelic and bucolic nature with the listeners.
Recalling the writing process behind the record, Lyys explains: “I was feeling a bit stuck creatively and set myself a challenge to write a new song each morning on a different topic – no matter how short or bad, I just had to get a song out before breakfast. […] That morning I felt bored with the idea of writing another love song or writing about another person – and so I wanted to think about what else I felt particularly passionate about that day. And I really have such a love affair with watching TV that the lyrics came pouring out of me.”
