There’s certainly a strong aura of haunting and dark matter around ‘Esau’s Tears’. Blending low, heavy distortion with guitar-based textures, the track seems to explore the intersection between grunge, alt-rock and shoegaze, although it ends up being something rather original, an authentic artistic manifesto by Last of the Lights. Emerging from Texas, the group has recently released their debut single, ‘Easu’s Tears’, taken from their upcoming split EP with fellow creative outfit Arcave.
The listening experience is cathartic: shifting between slow-paced, hypnotising sections to more upbeat and rebellious intercourses, the track flourishes in the brooding and kaleidoscopic character of the Lubbock-based band. Lead singer Gabi lends her evocative, melodious vocals to the cause, building a powerful contrast between her and the surrounding sonic setting. Corey’s guitar work is impressive, with riffs that are both heavy and melodic. Juan’s basslines provide a solid backbone to the track, while Sam’s drumming is tight and powerful.
A fantastic and intriguing start for a promising outfit. ‘Esau’s Tears’ showcases the band’s talent and potential, leaving listeners wanting more.
