Back in 2020, when the pandemic started, Owen Young felt the need to connect with a deeper side of himself. Naturally, songwriting was chosen as a medium, seeing how the American talent could already boast evocative vocals and guitar prowess. Having previously dabbled with lyrical storytelling for a few years before that, Young was able to collect a rather beefy collection of songs, intimate and relatable gems that feel soothing and cathartic, an enjoyable listening experience.
‘On A Day Like That’ contains the first five tracks from that project. The EP was written during the first and second isolating years of the pandemic, with most of the songs recorded with the help of engineer Jill Zimmermann at Jukasa Studios. That’s where the project took its final shape, with Owen organising the many lyrics he had written over wonderful instrumental tracks.
Released in 2021, ‘On A Day Like That’ represents Young’s effort to keep a positive outlook and hope for the future. Hopefully, he can now look back and be happy that the world has returned to some sort of normality. Furthermore, the Canadian songwriter has around fifteen songs in total that he plans to release in separate chapters as they are completed.
This means that listeners can expect more from Young in the future, and that his pandemic project will continue to evolve and grow – perhaps without being labelled as such anymore!
