Sahana Naresh Channels Traditional Indian Music in ‘Vaari Vaari’

If you have been following Sahana Naresh for a while, you might already appreciate her musical output, mostly built on Western-like formulas, balanced around soothing folk and acoustic music. Her musical prowess was abundantly clear, with Naresh championing a stunning ability to create intelligible, gentle melodies, often interlaced with the simplicity of a string-powered instrument. Now, the Indian talent returns with a more complex and meaningful record, channelling her roots and origins. A collaboration with fellow creative Nirmit, ‘Vaari Vaari’ is one of the most unique and authentic offerings we have come across this year.

In it, the listener will be immersed into Sahana Naresh’s own artistic universe: a place made up of traditional Hindustani music, Western electronica influences, and a decisively pop appeal, all mashed together through the Indian’s songstress’ nuanced lenses. The result is absolutely hypnotising, featuring a light and bouncy electronic beat supporting Indian vocals, chopped samples and a bright, dazzling array of synthetisers.

Sharing quite a strong cosmic energy, ‘Vaari Vaari’ places at the intersection of commercial and spiritual healing music, perhaps augmented by Naresh exceptional vocal performance, greatly enriched by the use of traditional elements such as gamaks (ornamentation of a note) & taans (improvisations of rapid melodic phrases).
