Daisy Clover’s State Fair Makes for a Serene Introspection on Unrequited Love

Malvika Padin

A charmingly chaotic collection that moves between relaxed and exhilarating, ‘State Fair’ from Aldo Elizalde’s solo project Daisy Clover makes for a heartfelt exploration of fading friendships and the pain of unrequited love for a friend.

Opening with the soulful piano lines and whispered, spoken word-esque of the title track that 8-track collection immediately establishes a blend of serenity and introspection before the uplifting feel of ‘Mystery,’ with its warm guitars and soothing vocals encapsulate the varied sonic influences that weave its way in and out of Daisy Clover’s artistry.

From the echoing atmospheric vibe of ‘All the Same,’ which clouds with a moody sensibility, the album moves into anthemic stand-out ‘Smile,’ which leaves us feeling uplifted.

The immersive and meditative final track ‘Ford Escape,’ is the solace we need after an emotional journey of ‘State Fair’, reminiscing on the infinitesimal moments that accumulated into an explosion of love, leaving us on a note of nostalgia and acceptance of how things have changed for us in the aftermath of that love.

Offering us a sonic jigsaw that makes no effort to be a cohesive collection, Daisy Clover’s latest project makes versatility and genre-fluidity its strength built around a straight-from-the-heart central theme.
