Dom Malin Returns with Indie-Folk Gem ‘The Sea’

If you have been following us, you already know what Dom Malin stands for. He’s first and foremost a nuanced and sensible songwriter, crafting soothing and relatable gems with the help of his trusted guitar. A proficient performer, he feels at home in very diverse settings: from the acoustic and bucolic lands of his previous effort  ‘All I Know’ – described by us as a “gentle and sorrowful exploration of grief and pain”, – to the classic indie-folk tones of ‘The Sea’, Malin’s latest record. Swapping the acoustic guitar for an electric one, the track is decisively more anthemic and cinematic, feeling almost celebrative, with a chorus that leaves us in absolute awe.

An established upcomer, Malin seems dead set on showcasing his class and worth, a mission that we are certain he’s managing extremely well. Introduced by a charming guitar riff, ‘The Sea’ soon makes its way through a complex pattern of piano lines, guitar-based poignancy and light drums. Malin’s vocals are as immersive as always, especially when layered into thick harmonies.

Lyrically, ‘The Sea’ seeks to motivate the listener into taking human relationships with kindness, keeping in mind that communication is key. As Malin explains: “Finding the courage to say something earlier and not let it escalate to the point where you get caught out. The conversational verses talk about the simplicity of conversation while the chorus asks the question if you had another shot would you do it differently?”
