common goldfish Celebrates Real-Life Interactions in ‘On The Sidelines’

We have always been particularly drawn to common goldfish’s music. Perhaps it is the way he’s able to blend sonic references so diverse from each other, from dazzling synthesisers to jangling guitars, passing through lo-fi vocals and breakbeat rhythms. The results are then staggering: a gooey, organic sonic concoction that seems to evoke a different era while remaining incredibly contemporary, even forward-thinking.

We wrote last about the Tottenham creative here and here – crowning his excellent period of artistic productivity, common goldfish is now back with ‘On The Sidelines’, a retro-flavoured single that seems to take in all the best qualities the London talent has to offer. In particular, we rejoice in noticing a heightened sense of 60s politeness and 70s fierceness. In that regard, ‘On The Sidelines’ is more approachable than usual, also showcasing the incredible variety and dynamism the project has to offer.

Lyrically, ‘On The Sidelines’ strikes up against the lack of social interaction. As common goldfish explains: “I believe we’re all spending too much time in our own online worlds, being fed information by algorithms that can end up pushing us further apart. It’s becoming too easy to find like-minded opinions, which can shelter us from different points of view. It is an upbeat call for people to come together through music and celebrate real-life interactions.”
