Emerging last year, ANNAKYE took almost a year off the scene to evolve and grow their artistry, looking for a more wholesome and authentic sound. Going from covering ‘New York New York’ in a grunge and punk style, the Australian band leaves it all behind in favour of a sonic direction that’s definitely more haunting and poignant, really entering the zenith of classic alt-rock. In fact, as an alt-rock band, they are phenomenal, and we rejoice to hear their latest effort.
‘Too Far South’ confirms what ANNAKYE are about: dark and emotional matter, really delving into human consciousness and the pressure of a sick society. In particular, the single focuses on the troubles of a toxic relationship, managing to convey in musical terms the pain and grief a situation like that would evoke.
Active since 2019, the Aussie talents are set for a big year, championing their newly-found identity. If ‘Too Far South’ is anything to go by, we are in for some glorious records. Introduced by dark and gritty textures, the track flourishes in clean guitar arpeggios, spacious vocals and screamed callbacks. Of course, distortion eventually hits hard, giving us a glimpse of ANNAKYE’s punch and electrifying energy.
