It’s always joyful to welcome a musical outfit back on the scene, after a long hiatus. German downtempo outfit AFFENTANZ were absent from international charts since 2021, letting their dazzling synthesisers and drum machines rest in a dark corner of a music studio. Well, that is no more: the Cologne-based project now returns with ‘Safe Place’, a Daft Punk-flavoured disco tune built on repetition, cosmic sweeps and charming vocoders.
When approaching ‘Safe Place’, one must be ready to embark on a dreamy journey, navigating through a sonic landscape of lush textures and hypnotic rhythms. From the filtered intro, the track sets a contemplative mood with its ethereal, haunting pads and robotic vocals, gradually building in intensity with expert synth works and intricate melodic motifs. The production is nuanced, creating a rich and immersive listening experience. As the track progresses, the layers of sound intertwine and evolve, culminating in a satisfying and cathartic climax that leaves the listener with a sense of awe and wonder.
