With its seminal topic and anthemic character, one could define Luke Frees’ latest effort as an empowerment anthem, an uplifting gem aiming to provide solace and comfort to the listener. Partly, that’s true. ‘Strings’ is also the continuation of an impressive productive cycle for the Chicago talent, a cycle that sees him releasing one track every month, steadily showcasing his songwriting prowess and musicianship qualities. His style features an exciting blend of power-pop and indie elements, all declined following a quirky and authentic sonic formula.
Also featuring Gary Zucker on drums, Niels Sorensen on bass, Garrett Frees on tenor saxophone, and Sadie Carpenter on whistles, the record manages to draw the listener into the project’s own lyricism, an inner voice that kindly and gently leaves something positive in the listening experience. To note, the stunning saxophone and guitar solo bringing ‘Strings’ to a close’ – a genius addition to an already convincing arrangement.
The single, recorded almost entirely at Luke’s apartment in Chicago, also features a b-side, titled ‘After Noon At The RR Diner’, a homage to one of Luke’s favourite shows, Twin Peaks. We’ll keep Frees on our radar, so make sure to do the same: plenty of new releases to come.
