Presenting itself with solemnity and a decisively celebrative character, ‘The Remote Past Tense’ is introduced by a charming single woodwind note, as to create an ethereal and highly peculiar sonic environment. It’s at this moment that we can hear Hollyer’s raw, unfiltered vocals in all their dynamic glory, before a punchy and industrial electronic beat joins the already anthemic track. Further on, gritty and fuzzy synth matter helps convey the dramatic yet liberating sense of freedom that comes after a breakup.
As sound alchemist Ken Urban recalls: “I remember we lit lots of candles when recording it, and when we played it for Johnny and I asked if he wanted to sing harmony, he was like, no, it’s perfect.” That’s interesting – the track really carries that sense of grandeur intimacy, in the sense that it transforms a rather personal and poignant song into an epic musical journey, the type of journey that flourishes with more people taking part in it.
Over the course of the past few months, Occurrence has steadily showcased a knack for experimental electronic pop, delivering some of the most compelling singles we have heard to date. Their music is not just made for the sake of reaching playlists, or landing on a specific chart: rather, it’s a carefully crafted work of art, a direct expression of the American trio’s nuanced personal expression.
