It’s a simple formula: an acoustic guitar, a light arrangement around it, and the evocative and poignant voices of Little Whyte Lies. That’s how ‘Time Zones’ is able to conquer its listeners, a song that’s as simple as it is nuanced, as meaningful and relatable as it is easily approachable. What’s more, the record signals the official debut in recording music of a very talented duo, Bath-based Little Whyte Lies.
Comprised of Natalie Langer and Phoenix Patterson, the project sees the pair playing to their strengths, making use of the gentle guitar tones performed so well by Phoenix and the anthemic violin lines mastered by Langer. Both are superb vocalists, bringing a certain choral quality to the project.
Going back to ‘Time Zones’, it is clear that their songwriting strongly rejoices from Little Whyte Lies’ authenticity. Not hiding behind a fancy production or convoluted soundscapes, their lyricism is able to flourish and reach the listeners right in their hearts, sharing themes of love, loss and existential angst. In particular, ‘Time Zones’ focuses on dealing with a long-distance relationship and the struggle to make it work.
