The keen reader will gladly remember soulful and evocative duo City Island. Emerging from New York, the pair are great singers, infusing their material with choral tones, soothing melodies and evocative storytelling. Proudly writing about their previous single ‘Shining Light’, we fiercely declared: “crafting meaningful music while keeping it simple: that’s a hard thing to do. NYC pop outfit City Island seems to have cracked the code, showcasing a relatable and uplifting lyrical style that instantly puts a smile on the listener’s face.”
Now, City Island return with what feels like their artistic confirmation, a collection of recent works collected n the EP ‘All The Love’. In it, the listener will experience everything the project stands for. Championing an inspiring lyrical outlook, the two Americans set out to challenge traditional notions of masculinity and break down barriers, doing so with a highly peculiar style that greatly draws from soul and pop classics. Flourishing over ballads, City Island’s songwriting is wonderful: comforting yet euphoric, slow yet intense. Perhaps it’s their evocative and layered vocals, building emotional and epic sonic landscapes with never-ending harmonies.
Nick Pretel and Josh Anthony – the humans behind the project – really hit the mark here. From the gospel, exuberant vibes of ‘I’m Not Lost’ to the uplifting and festive tones of ‘Christopher Street’, passing through the folk lyricism of ‘Nobody Knows’ – the EP is a worthy discovery for everyone.
