Enjoy the Summery Sounds of Jeffrey Chan’s ‘Surreal’

Jeremy Bregman

‘Surreal’ is the brand new release (and first for the year) from Sydney-based indie-pop artist Jeffrey Chan, and it’s a dreamy, summery, and vibrant little gem! It sees the singer/songwriter and producer exploring a more alternative sound to his music, and lyrically exploring the theme of true love and all its power. “I wanted the song to show how being in love can feel like a total escapist experience,” says Chan. “I wanted to capture that feeling of the honeymoon period and how completely surreal it feels at that point in time”. He truly has done that and more, with ‘Surreal’ instantly embedded in my mind and my heart after only just a few listens.

While his past works were deeply rooted in the sounds of 80s synth-pop, ‘Surreal’ takes a more modern and contemporary approach. In blending that with influences from 00s music, Chan has created a standout tune that simply transports you somewhere else, if only just for three minutes.

‘Surreal’ is a refreshing and captivating addition to the indie-pop world. It showcases Jeffrey’s incredible genre-bending powers, and I honestly believe that 2023 could be a huge year in Chan’s musical career.
