Cleo Handler Delivers Strong Imagery in Latest Album ‘gold’

If we had to describe Cleo Handler’s storytelling with just one word, we’d use ‘metaphorical’. The way she’s able to convey a specific concept with unconventional imagery and nuanced references is quite unmatched. Lucky for us, she’s got a whole album of it. ‘gold’ is the Californian artist’s second full-length record, following up from 2020’s ‘19 Songs to Sing Alone in Your House’; in it, the listener will find a glorious comeback, together with personal and artistic growth that blessed the LA-based creative in the past few years.

When approaching ‘gold’ one might need time to get used to Handler’s nonchalant vocal style; as if her song were light nuggets of wisdom, effortlessly delivered through tame melodies and polite intensity. The lyrical content stands out way more, creating a strong contrast between the musical delivery and its literary meaning. In the aftermath of a sudden breakup with her long-term partner, Cleo found solace in her music and channelled her emotions into this powerful collection of songs.

Sonically, the record explores acoustic pop and dreamy tones, leaving ample space for Handler’s understated vocals to take center stage and guide the listener through a poignant, yet uplifting and introspective journey. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Liz Phair and Olivia Rodrigo, ‘gold’ is a bold and honest exploration of heartache and the courage to keep clinging to hope even in the darkest of times. The accompanying lyric videos are a testament to Handler’s creative vision, offering a nostalgic and playful look at this wonderful record.
