There are a few things to consider when approaching The Sounds of Settling: first of all, the quality of its musical output, modern and refreshing pop-punk with an introspective and relatable lyrical flair. Then, the unique and authentic story behind the project. Headed by an actual doctor, Rob Bednarz, The Sounds of Settling is an artistic rebirth, building on the foundation of the American musician’s previous band, Hands On The Stereo. Now based in Scotland, Dr. Bednarz unveils the first chapter in a potentially glorious career.
‘Healing Failures’ is everything we could ever want it to be: polite, poignant and modern pop-punk, with a decisive pop imprint. In it, we can appreciate the Scottish resident’s evocative vocals, equally at home in heavy distortion as they are in cleaner and lighter settings. Honestly, it’s a really good record – looking forward to hearing more from the talented sonic wizard turned doctor.
Lyrically, the track delves into the complex nuances of the patient-doctor relationship, especially when things get tough and dramatic. As Bednarz explains: “Honestly, it’s tough. At the end of the day, at least here in the UK, the doctor makes the final decision if we think that the patient will just not get any benefit from us cracking their ribs, trying to bring them back to life – whatever quality of it will be left of it anyway”.
