There’s quite a unique feature in Mertens Folly. The three talented members all belong to different generations. Spanning almost 40 years of generational change, Tom, Niko and John have found their common ground in rock music, especially in fuzzy, warm guitars and retro-infused mellow tunes. Started as a simple and fun endeavour between family members, the project soon took a professional turn, especially when the band joined forces with producers Michael Salerno and David Walker.
‘I Just Wanna Learn a Lullaby’ was then born. Mertens Folly’s debut album, it contains a staggering 14 tracks, a very long record by today’s standards. In it, the listeners will find a mix of eclectic gems, from hard rock tones to gospel-infused moments. We’ll focus our attention on ‘Hero’, fierce-sounding and quite dynamic. Boasting a certain Southern and Country character, the song is particularly propped by the drums, really driving the track forward with expertise and punch.
While the drum part might appear simple at first, the groove and perfect timing that accompany the record are no easy task, even for experienced and professional drummers. In ‘Hero’, Mertens Folly showcases real class and musicianship, playing the right notes at the right time.
Notably, the band have donated any proceeds from ‘I Just Wanna Learn a Lullaby’ to a charity that teaches high school kids financial literacy, further demonstrating their passion and dedication to the project.
