There seems to be a bright future lining up for The Spiritual Leaders. Championing a highly contaminated indie rock imprint, the Irish band manages to blend electronic influences on dazzling guitar riffing, effectively creating a signature sound we’d place in the -tronica realm. Take for instance ‘Past Present Future’, their latest effort. Built over slightly saturated guitar tones, the track makes its way to the listener’s heart with early ‘2000 indie drum grooves and choral vocals, only to surprise us all with a synth-based bassline, firmly delivering a forward-thinking record planted in tradition and good taste.
There’s a certain musical contrast in ‘Past Present Future’: gritty and industrial synth work over bouncy drums and reflective guitars. Quite an eclectic recipe, showcasing the group’s ability to find their own path, leaving indie tropes and clichés behind. Lead vocalist David Reilly possesses a certain ‘Death Cab for Cutie’ quality in his vocals, perhaps a sense of poignancy. Cathal Brady and Fergus Brady complete what’s a very talented line-up.
Boasting a rather long history behind them, The Spiritual Leaders’ artistry has been evolving organically through the years, finally reaching a point where they seem to be their most authentic selves. The second release of the year, ‘Past Present Future’ also represents a further step towards the group’s upcoming album ‘The Fictional Place’, releasing March 24th.
