The Official 4pm (For Positive Music) is a Baltimore-based R&B group that is best known for its cover version of Kyu Sakamoto’s ‘Sukiyaki’, released nearly thirty years ago! It peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100 and saw Roberto Pena, Jr., Reney Pena, Larry McFarland, and Martiz Ware become household names. The talented group have reunited on many occasions, and is now back with a brand new single called ‘What Can I Say’.
The tune is a smooth, classy, and soulful little number with a reggae influence that dictates the “less-is-more” approach to the instrumentation. It allows for the stellar vocals of the musicians to come to the fore which, let’s be honest, is what we’re all here for!
Lyrically, ‘What Can I Say’ tells the classic tale of a man who cheats on his partner. He then realises his mistakes, begs for forgiveness, and recommits himself to her. In the end, she forgives him, but he will forever be a changed man.
The Official 4pm has had a storied history, with ups and downs, twists and turns, and a constantly evolving sound. To be honest…that’s why we love them!
