EIGHT THOUSAND BIRDS Release Beautiful Single ‘Blue House’

Jeremy Bregman

‘Blue House’ is the hauntingly beautiful new single from EIGHT THOUSAND BIRDS, an alternative-pop duo who have never met each other in real life. Made up of Vancouver-based musician Alejandro Zarazua and Johannesburg-based vocalist Hayley Chewins, the duo formed during the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘Blue House’ is a tune off of their latest EP ‘Turn Again and Come Back’, and serves as the perfect example of just what EIGHT THOUSAND BIRDS is all about. Personal and relatable lyrics, delightfully sung by Chewins, meet lush and eerie melodies to produce a track that is just spellbindingly good.

A song about our relationship with the past, and how certain things happen in life that we simply can’t close the door on, ‘Blue House’ showcases the incredible storytelling ability of Hayley Chewins. “I wanted to write about a woman who was trying to drive away from a house and couldn’t,” she says. “No matter how far she drove, she always ended up back in the driveway”.

EIGHT THOUSAND BIRDS’ ability to capture complex emotions in their music is a testament to the power of art to help us process the world around us. ‘Blue House’ is a stunning case of the kind of innovative music that emerges when artists are forced to connect in new ways.
