The keen reader might remember Californian innovator Gallowayyys thanks to a recent feature we did on him. Writing about ‘PARTY WITH YOU’, we proudly declared: “Delivering an eclectic blend of electronica, punk and hip-hop, the LA talent manages to open new sonic horizons, championing material that’s gritty, rough, at times lo-fi, and yet poignant and relatable”.
Standing behind our words, we are keen to bring to your attention the new chapter in what’s an already glorious career. ‘ANGELS WITH FANGS, Pt. 1’ is Gallowayyys’ latest effort, a three-track EP showcasing the constant evolution the project seems to endure. In it, the American hero is able to deconstruct his own style, borrowing from the most diverse influences: early 2000 dance music, boom-bap, mainstream pop and chillwave. it all concurs in shaping a rather original musical formula. Some might call it hyper-pop, although we might argue the material is way darker and punchier than what we usually define as hyper.
‘DYE IT READ’ opens the dances in melodious fashion, showcasing Gallowayyys intelligible and heavily treated vocals, drenched in a multicolour and charming arrangement. ‘PINK LEMONADE’ raises the stakes, turning up the tempo in the process. Channelling DnB and dazzling electronica, the track is definitely the more experimental in the EP.
‘STICKY FINGERS’ brings the record to a close with a certain poignancy, an intimate and nuanced offering elevated by a kaleidoscopic production. With Gallowayyys aiming to “cut through the cacophony of uploads and connect with fans of innovative music”, we’d argue he reached his goal perfectly, providing us with a source of escapism and empowerment.
