Cody Pepper might be a newcomer on the scene, but her artistic flair didn’t certainly go unnoticed: debuting in November last year with ‘Make A Wish’, the London resident showcased a strong creative and experimental character, delivering eclectic electronica with a visionary outlook. We liked it, so much so to declare “If Pepper’s intention was to shuffle the cards of our aural experience, she’s entirely successful. We are slightly confused and intrigued by what we hear, which is always a good outcome when approaching a new piece of music”.
Now, Pepper returns with ‘I Tried To Please’, an electrifying blend of boundless shoegaze tones and trip-hop grooves, the perfect framework for Pepper’s spacious vocals, drenched in dub-flavoured delays and strategically layered to maximise their impact. Slowly making its way towards an epic ending, the track jumps into a hypnotising classic flute segment, showcasing the cultural relevance of an artist able to blend the old with the new, potentially opening new sonic scenarios for interested listeners.
Lyrically, the track echoes an introspective journey towards self-respect. As Pepper explains: “I’m a people pleaser ok but this time, I decided to stop cutting myself short for others and to be myself no matter what and this is what this song is about”.
