If we had to describe Phidippus‘ music in one word, we’d choose ‘scattered’. That’s the nature of the sonic material contained by the Denver talent’s artistic output. Broken beats, jungle references, pulsating synths and chopped-up vocal samples: everything concurs into creating a unique and mesmerising sound formula, allowing the listener to vibe with it on a deeper level.
Calling himself Eric Salazar by day, the producer and electronic explorer is now sharing his latest EP, ‘Light & Dark’, an impressive leftfield record with a knack for IDM influences and fast-paced beats. In it, the listener will be met with a wealth of diverse material, potentially satisfying a lot of musical palates. Opening with ‘Darkness’, the EP navigates D&B territories, before jumping into ‘Please Tell Me What You Want’, a more poignant, reflective and emotional offering, albeit still containing jungle beats. To note, there’s a strong vocal component throughout the whole record: female vocals are treated in a bath of effects and autotune.
‘Seven Thousand Seven Hundred Miles’ continues on a slighter different path, embracing brainy and glitchy electronica over cinematic synths. ‘Naked’ brings the record to a close in organic fashion, featuring a sampled, jazz-flavoured drum beat over a soulful instrumental.
From 2010 to 2012, Phidippus was battling mental illness, but he continued to make music, taking inspiration from the drum & bass scene and releasing albums under the moniker Phidippus. His music has since been featured on Nahual Records, Full Send DnB, and other platforms, garnering over half a million plays on Soundcloud.
