Spencer Spark Explores the Power of Love in ‘Springboard’

Do you ever stop and ask yourself if you are still able to love someone? Remember that strong, furious feeling of attraction we all felt in our younger days – is it still there? And also, what is love anyway? While the writer of this article might not be able to supply readers with an answer, there are dreamers who can. Artists. Take for instance Australian talent Spencer Spark: inspired by the likes of Bjork, Kate Bush and Fiona Apple, the young singer and songwriter champions a bright and flamboyant sonic aesthetic, often drenched in deep lyricism and existential questions.

‘Springboard ‘ is her latest effort, a charming exploration of the power of love. Recalling the circumstances around the writing process, Spark explains that the inspiration came after a late-night conversation with her housemate Dale, birthing the crucial phrase “it’s a springboard that takes you to the infinite”. There you go, that’s the answer to our initial question!

Sonically, ‘Spingboard’ is made up of quirky and catchy art-pop, building a soft yet solid musical skeleton for Spark’s airy and bucolic vocals, perhaps influenced by the Aussie talent’s fierce queer identity, able to offer a refreshing and alternative take on seemingly simple material.

If you are in Sydney, you might consider taking part in Spark’s upcoming single launch, ‘Valentine’s Gay’ – on February 16th, at The Duke, in Enmore.
