Boasting a strong theatrical and elegant character, Canadian singer and songwriter Sail Cassady is sort of a hidden gem. We discovered him thanks to his latest release, ‘Hiding In Vancouver’, a wonderful and witty exploration of Cassady’s transformative personal experience. What’s impressive is his capacity to write about seemingly heavy and solemn themes with a certain nonchalance, playing down their aura of gravity through catchy and bright sonic matter.
‘Hiding In Vancouver’ is exactly that: a retro pop piece with musical flavourings all over it. While its sonic qualities are understated, serene and warm, its lyricism forms an obvious contrast in mood and resolution. An artistic chiaroscuro which seems to be working very well.
Emerging from Victoria, BC, Sail Cassady is fiercely championing a strong LGBTQ2S identity, further expressed by his writing and composition, containing references to sexuality, mental health and consciousness, all crucial themes in the Canadian’s talent artistry. Debuting all the way back in 2018, Cassady can now count on an extensive catalogue of releases, now returning to the music scene after a short hiatus.
‘Hiding In Vancouver’ prides itself on a soothing, cosy and exquisite musical backdrop, channelling smooth jazz and orchestra-like tones. Cassady’s vocals are light and airy, dancing effortlessly over their sonic backdrop, before jumping into a poignant and nostalgic chorus. A worthy listening experience.
