Brand new synthwave-flavoured pop duo Solari just emerged on the scene, boasting an epic sound and a ‘night drive’ mood. The project is the union of two musical masters, one of which we know quite well by now – David Baron – while the other is talented drummer and producer Renée Hikari. By channelling each other’s strengths into a cohesive and unique package, the pair have crafted their debut single, ‘Everyone Is Your Friend’, a pensive, nostalgic and anthemic banger with emphasis on steady grooves, arpeggiated synthesisers and dreamy vocals.
Lyrically, the song explores the notion of loneliness in a big city, touching on the epidemic of isolation that many of us feel despite being surrounded by countless strangers. While the record seeks to build a sonically complex virtual city, our protagonist – Solari – questions her own capability of loving someone and connecting to other humans. Can she break out of the loneliness that seems to be her prison?
A wonderful debut, the project has potential for a remarkably mesmerising album, a record that we are confident won’t take long to exist. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy ‘Everyone Is Your Friend’, a gentle reminder that amidst the hustle and bustle, we are all connected, and that we can all find belonging and friendship, if we are brave enough to look.
