When the music speaks for itself, you don’t need to add a fancy narrative around it. Seattle shoegaze hero Thats Nokay seems to have taken a direct example, building a project that doesn’t focus on a particular literary element, instead projecting all the attention on the musical matter, letting the music’s mesmerising sonic landscape pull the listeners in.
It sure pulled us in! ‘Fantasies’ – Thats Nokay’s latest effort – is an exciting aural journey, an ethereal wall of frequencies that seeks to be a powerful convection agent for our deepest thoughts. Guitars crown the piece perfectly: channelling shoegaze and post-punk energy, everything seems to bath in long reverbs, creating a melting, gooey mass of introspective and mesmerising sound matter.
