Bromsen Channels Old Influences and Memories in Comeback Single ‘The Photograph’

The keen reader might remember an interview we did with Berlin indietronica duo Bromsen just a couple of months ago. Describing the choice of indulging in ‘indietronica’, they explained: “Indie’ because of the guitar-based indie-rock roots of our old 2000er band; ‘the pampelmuse’ and ‘tronic’ because of the synth-wave which carries us through our lives.” That should you give you a clear indication of what to expect: punchy and fast drum machines, synth tones and intense vocals.

In fact, those characteristics perfectly fit Bromsen’s latest effort, ‘The Photograph’. Co-written with their old bandmate Manzari, the single channels a lot of their old band’s musical style, also featuring their past fellow musicians. In that sense, the track carries old hopes and memories of an era now long gone. As the German duo recalls: “The song is about the rock’n’roll dreams we had when we were young and which look like a faded photograph after some time, but sth. from that special perspective on live keeps sticking in your head and never fully goes away, so the negative is still there but nobody knows where it exactly is (and maybe we don’t even want to know, we just want to celebrate that feeling).”

‘The Photograph’ ends up being a new-wave and synth-wave banger, exhibiting its glorious chorus in true pop fashion. In it, we can observe Bromsen’s songwriting abilities. They are not just fine musicians and sound alchemists, but also refined writers. Alternating punchy arpeggiators and sharp leads to indie-style guitars, Karlo and Richard manage to take us back to their roots, while keeping true to their modern edge.
