Many of you might already know Wild Child. The Austin-based ensemble has been a permanent fixture in the folk and Americana scene, collecting a massing following and millions of streams. Historically a duo, Wild Child finds themselves on the verge of a new artistic chapter, adding new member John Calvin Abney to their creative core. Together, the talented trio shares a wonderful new single, ‘Wearing Blue’, out now on Reba’s Ranch Records.
The record follows up on previous single ‘Photographs’, signalling a new album set to be released next year. In ‘Wearing Blue’, longtime members Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins collaborate with Calvin Abney on a warm, poignant and gentle jewel. Boasting an intimate and introspective character, the song builds over mellow piano riffing and organic, jazz-flavoured drums. The result is the perfect sonic universe for Wilson’s lead vocals: evocative, hypnotising and nostalgic, they are here to remind us of the reason for Wild Child’s success.
Describing the writing process behind the single, Beggins explains: John entered our orbit so effortlessly and his unique mix of genuine charisma and talent ignited a fire on the writing of our new material. As such, ‘Wearing Blue’ happened in the first 30 minutes of officially getting the band back together. John shared a hauntingly beautiful piano riff that he had been holding onto for years and within a few minutes, Kelsey had found the perfect words and melody, as if they had fallen from the cosmos. The chemistry was undeniable and it marked a seamless transition into a new world of Wild Child.”
