There really is nothing like a summery, surfy, chilled-out beachy tune. ‘Higher Ground’ is the brand new release from Boston-based surf rockers Dune Dogs, and it’s a wonderful fusion of reggae rhythms, a little bit of pop, a sprinkle of punk, and a whole lot of surf rock. It’s dreamy and laid-back and instantly immersive. Nick Bernarducci’s vocal performance is the perfect match for the soundscape yet, lyrically, things are a bit darker than they seem. The tune tackles the gut-wrenching theme of unrequited love. The fear of being hurt and, at the same, having the courage to show patience and hope if necessary.
‘Higher Ground’ is Dune Dogs’ first single since their extremely well-received second album ‘After a While’. Having been released just earlier this year, songs from the album have racked up over 73,000 plays on Spotify already.
Formed in 2019 by school friends and surfing enthusiasts, Dune Dogs have quickly established themselves as up-and-comers on the scene. They’ve played all over the North Shore region and performed at numerous festivals and parades in 2021. I get the feeling there are some big things in store for them in 2023!
